Games of The Year 2013 and Onwards

While browsing through my gaming news sources I came by some “Games of the Year” articles so I thought I’d write my own to sum up 2013’s year of gaming.

I used to be a PC gamer but as my interest grew in Japanese exclusive Anime and games and, I started to have a proper income I moved to console gaming. Internet made it easy to import games and the Western games market didn’t really interest me too much.

So anyway, games listed here are according to their first release date in their native country. A few I’ve spent time writing up reviews for but if I haven’t, think of what’s here as mini reviews.

Games of the Year 2013

Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamics

I quite enjoyed the reboot. The direction was good in driving the prequel story as to how Lara Croft became the explorer she did. Then there was the RPG style points system for upgrading skills and collecting parts to upgrade your weapons. There were some QTEs but the game wasn’t completely filled with them. Graphics were up-to-date for the PS3 which was a bonus.

The pre-rendered cutscenes were so good it would have been great to see a CG movie. Especially after watching the original teaser trailer for this game.

Spoiler
The only part I didn’t like about the Tomb Raider reboot was the parachuting event which took numerous retries to beat because it was really hard to tell which areas you could glide through!

Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki Gets a Sequel, Kiseki Series 10th Anniversary

And you can find the official press release in PDF here.

It was pretty much expected if you’ve played the game. Falcom pretty much did what they did to Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky) to “Sen no Kiseki (Trails in a Flash)” too – leave a big cliffhanger for players.

However, it’s good news we’re getting more of the same because Falcom finally breathed some life back into the Kiseki series.

Sen no Kiseki 2

A Little History

Part of Falcom Japan’s spin-off “Kiseki” series, it all kicked off with “Sora no Kiseki (AKA Trails in the Sky in the West)”. I say spin-off because it was originally supposed to be a one off title that was part of their “Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of Heroes)” series but, FC was so successful, it now has its own franchise.

So, 10 Years of “Kiseki” games, eh? (sounds like 10 years of “miracles” if you treat it as a pun!) Doesn’t feel that long since I imported the first original title on PC.

For a little background on how the “Kiseki” franchise developed, lets wind back a few titles.

Falcom is Looking for 30 Voice Actors for Zero no Kiseki | Falcomが「零の奇跡」プレイヤー声優募集?! | 日本Falcom招集「零之奇跡」聲演員?!

It appears Falcom are accepting applications for anyone who’d like to have a role voice acting in their fourth “Sora no Kiseki” sequel, “Zero no Kiseki“.

Applications began on Monday shortly after they announced the game and will be open until May 31st. The application procedure is simple – Pick one of the shown character sprites on the site and then give it a name.

30 names will then be randomly drawn and be given a minor role in the PSP game. Falcom staff will set up the rest such as your lines and the kind of personality your side character has.

This might end up being a break for anyone aspiring to be a voice actor/actress.

Falcom Reveals Their First Fighter and New Sora no Kiseki RPG

Falcom must really love their “Sora no Kiseki” RPG setup because they are now working on a fourth title for the PSP!

There’s not much information regarding this new title named “Zero no Kiseki” at the moment other than teaser screenshots and that the protagonists are named Loyd Bannings and Elly McDowell. Apparently these characters were shown in the bonus “Legend of Heroes 7 Design Works” book that came as a bonus with their last game, Ys7.

Expect to see this sometime this year, 2010.
