Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (2023, Bug Films)
ゾン100 ~ゾンビになるまでにしたい100のこと~
Zon 100 Zonbi ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto
24 year old Akira Tendo thought he had landed his dream job in the production industry but 3 years later, he is fed up of his daily work life at his exploitative company working days straight without going home. Just when all was becoming monotonous he wakes up to find everyone had turned into zombies and he was just happy he didn't have to go to work again.
And so, Akira makes a bucketlist of 100 things he's always wanted to do and aim to achieve during his new found freedom, before becomes a zombie. Along the way, he meets a few new friends including his macho idiot college friend, Kenichi "Kencho", realist tactical Shizuka and atheletic German Japanophile Beatrix who joins in filling the list.
The show kicks off by taking a jab at exploitative companies in Japan where overworking is still a major issue. The rest of it is kind of a weird take on your usual zombie apocalypse. Zombies themselves look nasty but instead of filling the screen with gore and blood, it's mostly just coloured paint instead.
There's a number of relatable scenes as Akira talks about the world of work and shares a few tender moments he meets with other survivors. All the characters have their own agendas, some good some with ill intentions.
It has your usual fair share of fan service like busty character designs and hot spring scenes but there's also the ongoing joke of macho Kencho running around nude as zombie bait too. First half of the series the OP uses footage from the last episode but after that it kind of evolves with whatever's happened with the show.
It's a strange show. Rather than an action survival show fighting off zombies, it's more like a slice-of-life set in a zombie world. More chilling, less fighting. A fun end to season one, giving everyone some screen time.
