ダンダダン

Worth A Watch

Dandadan

High school "Gal" Momo Ayase has just broke up with her boyfriend. By chance she comes across a lone boy Ken Takakura in another class being bullied and decides to stand up for him. Thinking there was someone he could befriend, he rambles on about his interest in occult to her. While Ayase believed in ghosts because of her grandma she didn't believe in the aliens that Ken did.

And so, they challenge each other to go to popular sighting spots. Ken ends up losing his "banana" and gets cursed by the evil spirit Turbo Granny, while Ayase unlocks her psychic power which she needs to keep the curse at bay. Unwilling to call him by his real name because it's the same as her dream man, she nicknames him "Okarun" because of his passion in occult.

Now they must stick together until they can lift the Turbo Granny's curse while fending off other supernatural attackers.Seen a lot of hype about this show and the first episode made a good impression. Weird fun action packed comedy.

The setup about a pretty girl coming to a nerd's rescue feels pretty cliche for super power shows and scenarios can be pretty silly but there's quite a story behind every attacker.

Romcom setup between the Momo and Okarun is fun to watch although "Okarun" sounds like "Okarin" from Steins;gate - both passionate about their hobbies. They actually do the old romance show routine where they accidentally miss each other multiple times. Rest of the characters do a lot silly things to keep the show amusing too and there's quite a few 90s show references.

Plenty of dirty jokes but pretty standard for a horror comedy setup just like live action movies. Literally "toilet jokes". Nudity too of course but not in the fan service kind of way. It actually feels like the team decided to get it out of the way right at the start of the show and then no more.

Aesthetics don't look much from the getgo but animation's smooth. Actually been hearing the OP Creepy Nut's "Otonoke" a lot on Japanese radio before starting this. Character designs kind of remind me of Jujutsu Kaisen with the dark clothing, white hairdos. Just very little gore.

Despite being occult themed don't expect anything familiar such as the Youkai you see from Gegege no Kitaro. They all look like original designs made for this comedy show. You also have to wonder if Turbo Granny would get along with Nyanko Sensei...

Also was kind of weird hearing Kimetsu's Natsuki Hanae, Tanjiro voice as Ken and One Piece Mayumi Tanaka, Luffy's voice. I guess she had the time for other roles while One Piece was postponed.

Fun show if you don't mind the jokes about a guy's family jewels, which make the jokes a tad over-the-top along with the cliche setup. S1 felt like watching Tengoku Daimakyo S1 all over again. Hopefully see more soon.
