Silver-tongued Gene Starwind is a bounty hunter who also runs a repair shop Starwind and Hawkings with his younger brother Jim.
When he takes in a job from runaway "Ice" Hilda, they find themselves travelling space on the "Outlaw Star" while protecting a mysterious bio-android girl named "Melfina" and discovering her past. As they learn more about the Galactic Leyline the many pirate factions are soughting after, they meet friends and foes alike.
There's clearly a lot of effort put into the lore since you get a brief bit of it before every episode.
Sci-fi aesthetics look great but has a kind of Gundam vibe to it which might not be so odd when it's by Sunrise; machinery, space background. The world designs are a bit too filled with Chinese and doesn't vary much. A lot of it is filled with neon signs much like Ghost in the Shell, Chinese Hanzi too not Japanese Kanji.
There's a lot of cliches like the enemy protecting Gene because "only they can defeat him". Character dynamics are fun despite the mostly archaic types of personalities but there isn't much background coverage for the supporting characters on the team like Suzuka or Aisha. The two hardly participate in anything because the gang aren't considered comrades like in say One Piece. Only Gene and Melfina's past are covered.
Enemy designs are freaky and mechanical parts are so detailed they look like gore. Ending portrait art is kind of creepy in a surreal way too... There's actually no gore or even blood despite all the gun fights and brawls. It's as funny as it is stylish with plenty of jokes thrown in.
I think they overdo it with the gunshot sound during transitions in the first few episodes. There's a lot of innuendo, not your usual "accidental" fan service; mainly Gene flirting with the girls. There is your obligatory hot spring fan episode though.
It's mostly space adventure with the odd fight and stunts. I didn't quite like how the main plot wrapped up but did enjoy how it covered how all the characters from Gene's crew were doing. A pretty fun watch with an odd mix of sci-fi and fantasy magic.
