Paprika (2006, Madhouse)
パプリカ
A company has invented a psychotherapy device that allows others to enter another's dream, the "DC Mini". As it allowed rewriting one's subconscious, it could also those with malicious intent to kill or change someone's character. The developers behind the device realise the still in development devices had been stolen and their colleagues driven crazy. And so Atsuko tries to use her dream persona "Paprika" to save her colleagues while tracking down the culprit.
"Late to the party" and watched this because the few clips I saw of it felt like Inception but it's actually quite dull... The dreams have a creepy vibe to them but don't feel that creative or compelling to watch. It might be because it jumps from one to another too quickly and it's too blatant something is out of place. Direction feels very chaotic.
I had watched another one of Satoshi Kon's works, Perfect Blue because of the hype and wasn't impressed with that either so I guess it shouldn't be surprising I found this dull too. Character designs and the dual character vibes certainly match. As an Easter Egg, you'll see all his previous works shown at the cinema scene.
Think I'll have to avoid his other works in the future.
