Gnosia (2025, Domerica)
グノーシア

Yuri has just been awakened after recovering from an attack by Gnosia infectees; humans infected by an alien organism that causes them to kill others. As their refugee ship from Liu-An is threatened by the detection of a single infectee amongst them, Yuri (affected with amnesia) is tasked to help figure out who it is.
However after failing the first time, Yuri is granted the "Silver Key" by a fellow passenger that causes him to be stuck in a time loop. Not only that, his actions cause him to be in different world lines where the situation changes. Now he must learn how to adapt depending on the ever changing situation between the humanoids and Gnosias.
Kept seeing this visual novel based sci-fi crime show appear on my timeline so I got curious enough to watch it.
Never played the game and episode 1 didn't make much of an impression. Felt kind of weird Yuri is stuck in a "time loop" to figure out who it is by voting until you realise it's more about developing his character to win over everyone else.
At first, it feels like a video game it's based off as each episode introduces new characters and Yuri gains new abilities while the game gets harder but, it picks up 3 episodes in as more of the world setting is revealed. Characters end up with new roles too similar to classes in an RPG even though their personalities don't change.
There's enough to keep each new loop interesting, unveiling the history behind each character and more of a deeper plot.
The evolving rules and conditions feel kind of silly in some episodes. Quite enjoyable watching him interact with each character, building confidence and honing his deduction skills. You've got your usual cliches but there's also plenty of weirdness thrown in to make each new scenario unique in a certain way, adding to difficulty of determining if they are Gnosia or not. There's a fair bit of comedy thrown in.
The direction feels like Steins;gate where the protagonist is trying to find the perfect world line but then again, Steins;gate was also influenced by the movie Butterfly Effect. There's actually no gore when the murders happen but there is some brief screaming for the most of the show. Well, at least until Yuri is close to reaching "Steins;gate", the best ending for everyone... There are a lot of nasty death scenes.
Music is quite good. Quite enjoy the OP even though the heavy beat somewhat resembles KPOP. Environment design is pretty bland for sci-fi and not the detailed kind where it feels like there's a lot of thought put into it e.g. how everything works. There's even a store that uses giant floppy disks in place of vinyl records. Characters are wearing flashy multi-coloured clothing so it's kind of like one of those shallow sci-fi shows where as long as there are lights and weird clothes, it must be sci-fi. Like Steins;gate, the characters look similar but the art style is a very different.
Funnily enough SQ is voiced by the same voice actress as Kimetsu's Nezuko.
There's a bit of fan service to it in the form of poses and camera angles with the ladies. One even walks around mostly naked and includes steamy shower scenes.
I think they managed to do a lot with the story considering everything fairly much took place in a single room and one loop per episode whereas stories like Steins;gate, Summer's Time Rendering and Erased had a lot more places.
After getting my interest piqued I tried the "werewolf hunting" game which is actually pretty tedious to play. The goal is to fill out every character's profile just like the show but to do that the conditions need to be right and so does your stats. I got bored of it quite quickly after 20 loops or so but played on to see how faithful the show was. It was a good adaptation from what I've seen by loop 120.
