Japan Wii News Coverage and the Top 10 Games

無中文版

Well, tomorrow is the day when the Wii gets launched over here in UK and people are already queuing for it in London. Since the Wii's launch in Japan on Saturday 371,936 units were sold over the weekend. Here's two videos of Wii coverage that someone put together on Youtube.

Here we can see what some of the queuing people had prepared for the cold outdoors while they were waiting and also lots of people playing their DS. The lady interviewed said her children wanted one so they came to purchase one and hopes to enjoy the games console together. Other comments were...

"You don't play the games with buttons only so children should be able to play it easily."

"I was thinking I could play together with my family and friends."

Following that was a demonstration of the Wii with two presenters. The female presenter, who said she used to be number one in the school tennis club, was surprised at why she was sweating from playing tennis on Wii Sports. The man laughs saying she was getting into it too seriously. In the end, they both agree it was a whole different experience and that even people who don't usually play games can enjoy the Wii. Also that it's great that you could exercise at the same time!

On the other hand, it also covered the American launch that sold 600,000 units in 8 days. Then there was the trouble at the Sony PS3 launch with all the police there! Hmmm, don't remember reading about that! While the Wii was being sold fast in the US, Japan was still selling out of DSes in stores.

They used one of the Prince of Tennis OSTs in the background towards the end of the programme when they were interviewing the middle aged people. The first bald man found it good exercise but still pretty difficult to play because the simulated games were different from the real thing.

It turns out that even children were in those long overnight queues. The news report also found that the age at which children were enjoying games was becoming increasingly younger with 28% of 4 year olds already playing them.

So what were the top 10 games were the Japanese after?

  1. Wii Sports
  2. Hajimete no Wii (My First Wii)
  3. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  4. Odoru, Made in Wario
  5. Swing Golf Pangya
  6. Ennichi no Tatsujin
  7. SD Gundam Scad Hammers
  8. Red Steele
  9. Tamagotchi no Pikapika Daitouryou!
  10. Elebits
